Self Defence

Today & all day yesterday we, the room 41 & 42 girls, were in the boot camp room behind the gym. Learning self defence was fun. Our teacher was a lady call Ellie. She had taught us last year as well. We got cool bands, a pencil, a poster & a certificate. We learnt how to kick, punch & block. We were also taught the vulnerable parts of an attacker, which is practically straight down the middle. We also learnt to not wash our hands or anything because there might be skin cells that the police can use for Deoxyribonucleic Acid, DNA.
We learnt lots, like about natural weapons, like when one lady used a comb and scraped it across his face.

It was really fun & now I feel like I can keep myself or others safe.

Show not Tell

1. Felila was exhausted.
Felila flopped onto the grass after completing the run. She huffed and puffed. She lay there until the last people came back. She picked herself up and trudged back to class.

2. Russell was hungry.
Russell walked around, staring enviously at other peoples lunch.

3.  Troy was lying.
Troy knew that he could not tell them. He was called into the office. He told what happened. His eyes darted to the left. His hands were sweaty.
They brought in a witness, who saw everything unfold.  His hopes fell.

Show Not Tell.

1. Caine was addicted to computer gaming.
Caine opened a new tab. He wondered why he opened it. He looked to his bookmarks bar and clicked on the 'Personal' folder. His mouse hovered around the 'Games' folder. He tried to resist the urge to click one of the games. He saw the teacher coming towards him, the curse was broken, he exited the tab.

2. Maia felt sick.
Maia choughed and stared longingly at her food. She was hungry but her stomach felt like it was knotting up.  A sharp pang shot through her. Maia groaned.

3. Josh was worried about being late for school.
Josh hurried to the door. 'I'm probably gonna get growled.' He thought, 'What am I gonna do? This isn't gonna end well.' He got to school and everyone was still waiting outside the door for Ms Campbell. He sighed with relief. He settled into the line and started talking to his mates.

Show not tell,

1. Matthew was lonely.
Matthew sat alone on a bench. He watched all the other people talking and gossiping. He dropped his head and stared at his hands.

2. Kyle was excited about maths.

Kyle couldn't wait to get reading over & done with. He had his math book at the ready. Kyle kept glancing at his math book. The clock hands seemed to dawdle across to 12:00.

3. Connor was terrified of answering his phone.

Connor sat on his bed, staring at his phone on the other side. He wrung his hands. He reached over to turn it off and it rang he shoved it under his pillow.

Daniel Tammet.

Daniel Tammet is a savant. A person who is autistic but is really really good at one to two things.
He remembered over 22, 514 numbers of PI.  He is one of about 52 ture savants in the world. He has a very good memory.  He can memorize a long list of numbers and repeat them back, even backwards.
Normally people who are autistic can't really look after themselves but are really good at one thing.
Daniel learnt Icelandic in two weeks. Supposedly the worlds hardest language to learn. He feels an emotional connection to numbers. He says he can describe how his brain works.

Poem about my weekend.

On Saturday the weather was good until about 2 o'clock.
We did some gardening, it was fun.
We planted plants edible and not.
Butter Beans and Beetroot.
So yum.
The Butter Beans looked like they had arms.
Found a tulip in the garden.
Way away from all others.
Put up bird netting to stop the chicken.
Slyly o Slyly why do you tear up the garden when we don't wanna.

Sunday Sunday was so fun.
Fishing for seaweed, got it done.
Moved from under the bridge to the wharf.
Wind picked up, seaweeds a kite.
Suddenly the wind changed direction.
Don't hug me seaweed, what you doing?
Packed up went to the Mount.
Got some Fish n' chips to eat on the beach.
Dad ordered a dozen squidy rings.
Found a table by the beach.
Ate the food, Squidy rings are so yum.
Walked out the island thing.
Don't know it's name.
Used to be Leisure Island.
Climbed random rocks.
Went back to the beach.
Splashed around.
The water was cold but not to so.
My weekend was fun, so much so.

Mrs V

On Monday & Tuesday Ms Campbell hurt her back and couldn't walk. So we had a reliever teacher. We did pretty much what we would have done but in between we had fun worksheets. You colour, do math colouring or word searches. I choose to colour in a shark. It was fun because we also got to listen to music, classic rock which still has quality music, so we didn't know the lyrics.  For maths though people claimed they didn't know what they had to do, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS ON MATH ROTATION TASKS.

Experiences of bullying,

Well in year four I had a teacher that was called Ms Pennington. Her birthday was the same as mine. 1st o July. I had self confidence and would talk to people. Amazing aye. Then I can't remember what happened but she would put me in all the lowest groups, even though I knew that stuff. I don't remember stuff because if I don't like it, or it's not that important then why should I remember it? But my Mum doesn't like her either. She shattered my self confidence. It probably didn't help that I was also bullied by other people in my class, Ms Pennington didn't do anything, at all. My Mum stepped in and I stood up to them, they were scared shipless. Dun Dun Dunn.

For & Against,

Statement: Chopsticks & Chinese cutlery are better than normal cutlery.

For:
Chopsticks are easier to use once you know how to use them. It's a kind of universal tool. You can use chopsticks as a fork by either picking up the food or stabbing it. You can also use chopsticks as a knife. You don't need a spoon because soups and things come in small bowls where you drink it instead of using a spoon.  It will be better because little kids these days don't even use their cutlery, they use their fingers. The equity of people eating these days is terrible. You don't have to eat Asian food with chopsticks, even though its more healthy, you can eat other types of food as well.

Against:
Using chopsticks is really hard to use. What are the other pieces of cutlery for? The small bowls? The other things are confusing. What if you want to eat like a salad? Or would we have to always eat Asian food? Like isn't using your fingers easier? Do we really have to use cutlery at all? We should just scrap all cutlery entirely. I mean how do you cut with a chopstick? What if stuff is slippery and you can't pick it up with chopsticks.

Who wants to read my story so far??

Things that annoy me 2

I hate it when people set you a task without enough details to complete it. I mean like what am I supposed to do? Really? What are the requirements for the task? Really? What do I have to do!? Like if I have to upload something where do I upload it? What account do I use to upload it? How do I get into that account????????????? I need details to finish things! Helpful details as well.

Things that annoy me.

Get ready for the list :)

It annoys me when...

People don't use their indicators, how can people do anything when they have no idea what everyone else is doing! Don't they know its... you guessed it ... it's ILLEGAL!

People jaywalk. Don't you know it's technically illegal! In Melbourne you will be fined, and maybe thrown in jail.

People annoy me. Yes people are very annoying. I don't know why really but they just are. It might just be my family because we all don't really like people.

People, people, people, did you know that biking without your helmet is illegal? No? Well then did you know that if you bike on the footpath and your wheel has a surcome france more than 30cm and the road is safe it's ILLEGAL? No? What about this? If you bike in the bike lane the wrong way? No? Well then did you know that it's a $55 fine?? No? Really you didn't know anything? Well you'll be fine because the stupid police don't do nothing even though it's ILLEGAL.

Are zombies mythical.

For: Well zombies are mythical because they are a figure of imagination that has created them.
Zombies don't exist. They are from the greek word 'I can't remember' that means 'the dead that walk among us.'

Against: Zombies are not mythical because although they don't exist they don't fall under the 'mythical' status.  Zombies could exist because there have been reports that in America some guy was shot to death when he was found leaning across his car into the other car and eating the other guys face. Both died.

Is computer gaming good for people?

For: "Well computer gaming is good for people."

Against: "Why? If anything it's bad for you."

For: "Well it probably increases your IQ because most games have quests and puzzles you have to solve. It's a mental workout."

Against: "Mental workout? You need a real workout! Not just some silly adventure game where you run around in the game. Gaming all day you'll get fat."

For: "That depends how much you play each day. But you need a mental workout to be better at physical workout. We gamers don't just mash keys all day we have to press them in complex patterns."

Against: "Complex patterns, pfff, I could probably master the games instantly. Not that I'd want to anyway... I wouldn't like to be an antisocial idiot like you."

For: "Well, in some games it's social and you can make really good friends."

Homework week 1-2

For one part of homework we have to measure something in our house and either draw it to scale or make it on 'Google Sketch-Up'. I made it on Sketch-Up.
The Poof -- foot rest -- is 35 cm high and 37 cm across. The lady is 169 cm tall.

Who Am I?

I have very pale skin, almost white.
My suit is always crisp and clean.
My home is in the woods, come, I'll meet you there.
I'll leave directions on 8 notes.
My expressionless face, may appear right behind you.

New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL)

We have been learning languages in Rimu. At the moment it's just the year 8's because the year 7's are going to camp soon.

Ms Campbell has been taking Chinese-Mandarin & Mrs Mills has been taking NZSL -- New Zealand Sign Language. We've been split into two groups. I'm in the group that is learning NZSL. Tyla & Maia are in my group. :)

We learnt about the dominate hand and the three different types of signs, the ones with one hand, the ones with two hands doing the same type of movement & the ones using both hands with different movements.

I can't wait for Chinese-Mandarin!!
